Everything we know about Pippa Middleton’s baby boy

Pippa Middleton and her husband, former race car driver and hedge fund manager James Matthews, welcomed their first child into the world on Oct. 15, 2018. The English socialite’s rep, Jo Milloy, confirmed the good news the next day, revealing that the happy couple, who’d tied the knot at St. Mark’s Church in Englefield, England in May 2017, had a baby boy (via USA Today). Of course, the birth of Middleton and Matthews’ child didn’t come out of nowhere. Middleton had previously announced her pregnancy back in June 2018, in a fitness column she penned for Waitrose Weekend.

Still, fans of the Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister have understandably been eager to learn more about the newborn. What’s his name? And what will family life be like for him? And, well, despite the young life of Pippa Middleton’s baby boy, there’s apparently a lot to learn about him. Here’s everything we know about Middleton and Matthew’s son.

Welcome to the world

Pippa Middleton gave birth to her and James Matthews’ son in the early afternoon of Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at 1:58 p.m, as her rep confirmed to USA Today. Their baby weighed 8 lbs., 9 oz. at birth. “Everyone is delighted and Mother and baby are doing well,” Milloy shared.

Fans had suspected to hear news of the arrival of Middleton and Matthews’ first child, as Middleton was seen entering a private maternity unit in London’s St. Mary’s Hospital on Oct. 14 (via the Daily Mail). Following her into the facility was Matthews, who was reportedly carrying both a diaper bag and a weekender bag.

We assume that St. Mary’s came highly recommended to Middleton, as her sister, Kate Middleton, has also stayed at St. Mary’s for the deliveries of her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as reported by The Sun. Duchess Kate’s husband, Prince William, and her brother-in-law Prince Harry were also born at the hospital. Clearly St. Mary’s is the place to be for expectant mothers and newborn babies.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are 'thrilled'

Speaking of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the royal couple is reportedly beyond excited at the birth of Pippa Middleton and James Matthew’s first child. Kensington Palace released a statement on behalf of the high-profile pair, telling People magazine, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are thrilled for Pippa and James.”

Having three children of their own, William and Kate will likely have some wise advice for the new parents — and maybe some chic hand-me-down clothes for the little one to wear. Not that Pippa Middleton and James Matthews need to start pinching pennies, of course. In 2017, AOL estimated that Middleton’s net worth was $294,000, while Matthews’ is reportedly over $2.6 billion. Still, buying new clothes for ever-growing children does add up.

Then again, William and Kate may be hoarding baby clothes for themselves, as they welcomed baby Louis in April 2018, less than six months before Middleton and Matthews’ kiddo was born. And who knows how many other children their future will bring?

He'll have plenty of playmates

Luckily for Pippa Middleton’s baby boy, he’ll have plenty of young friends to play with throughout his childhood. At the time of this writing, the child has three cousins from the royal family — Prince William and Duchess Kate’s kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Middleton’s son also has another cousin on his dad’s side. As People reported, James Matthews’ brother, TV personality and Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews, and sister-in-law Vogue Williams welcomed their first child — a boy named Theodore Frederick Michael — in early September 2018.

Spencer Matthews previously spoke out about how “very blessed” he felt that his child would be close together in age with his brother’s kid. He told British talk show This Morning, “I think it will be great for the kids to kind of grow up together. … We’re all looking forward.” How sweet is that? Pippa Middleton and James Matthews are fortunate to have such a big family!

Will he have a royal title?

Pippa Middleton and James Matthews have a strong connection to the royal family, as Middleton’s older sister, Kate, is married to Prince William. Williams’ grandmother Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch, and William himself is second in line to the throne, following his father, Prince Charles. But what about Middleton and Matthews’ kid? Will he have any kind of royal title given the family’s close relation to royalty?

The answer is: no. Despite being a first cousin to members of the royal family, Middleton and Matthews’ son will not have a fancy royal title. “Pippa is Mrs. James Matthews, [so] her kids will be Master or Miss Christian name Matthews,” royal expert Marlene Koenig told Town & Country magazine. “No titles whatsoever.”

Middleton and Matthews don’t have royal titles either. While they’re sometimes referred to as the Laird and Lady of Glen Affic, it’s largely an honorary description, as the titles were obtained after Matthews’ father bought the Glen Affric estate in the Scottish Highlands in 2008.

He attended two royal weddings before he was even born

Pippa Middleton’s son has already been to two major royal events, despite having only been born on Oct. 15. Well, kind of. You see, Middleton was pregnant with her baby boy back when she attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s headline-making wedding on May 19, 2018, though she hadn’t yet confirmed the news of her pregnancy to the public at that time. Given that Middleton later revealed she was at least 12 weeks along on June 7, that means she was at least 8 weeks pregnant when she donned that green floral dress on the prince’s big day.

Then, when Middleton was 9 months pregnant, she and James Matthews attended Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding on Oct. 12 — just days before she delivered her son. Wearing a deep green number with a matching hat, Middleton garnered lots of attention for her big, pregnant belly, especially as many reportedly thought that she’d previously been in labor after cameras spotted her at the hospital a week earlier (via Harper’s Bazaar).

Guess Middleton and Matthews’ boy is already quite the socialite.

His birthday coincided with major royal baby news

Middleton and Matthews’ son was born on a day that was already marked by major news — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement that they were expecting their first child together. Early on Oct. 15, 2018, Kensington Palace revealed, “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.”

And the moment marked an important time in royal history. “Meghan is an American, she’s the first mixed-race woman to marry into the royal family — we’re going to have the first mixed-race child in the royal family,” royal expert Roya Nikkhah shared with CBS News, “and I think the queen is going to be absolutely thrilled.”

One person who reportedly wasn’t thrilled with Meghan’s pregnancy news was Princess Eugenie, as many family members congratulated the former Suits star at Eugenie’s Oct. 12th wedding — thereby taking attention away from the bride on her big day. Man, if Eugenie hated being upstaged by Meghan’s pregnancy, we wonder how she feels now that Pippa Middleton is dominating headlines with the birth of her child so soon after her wedding.

He'll probably be introduced to exercise early on

Pippa Middleton and James Matthews are super into sports and fitness. The couple have participated in a number of physically demanding events over the years, including Norway’s Birkebeiner ski race and the Ötillö Swimrun World Championship, a 47-mile swim-run competition in Sweden. Middleton also famously kept in top shape throughout her pregnancy, sticking to a fitness routine. “I’ve noticed my body change but through exercise I feel it’s being strengthened,” she shared in a fitness column in Waitrose Kitchen (via Harper’s Bazaar).

She later shared that she’d taken up swimming as a regular part of her daily exercise. “From personal experience, I’d confidently say I find it has been the most enjoyable and rewarding form of exercise since I found out I was expecting,” she stated. “It’s comforting to know that it’s safe throughout pregnancy, and you don’t need to adapt and change too much (unlike most other sports).”

So, given Middleton’s penchant for working out, it would come as no surprise if she and her husband got their firstborn into sports early on in his life.

Family meals will be a big part of his life

As reported by the Daily Mail, Pippa Middleton’s childhood dinners with her family were important to her upbringing. “We were taught to eat properly and to eat together as a family three times a day,” she shared in September 2016, while promoting her cookbook Heartfelt.

She added that her parents would make her stay at the dining table until she finished her meals. “We had to eat everything on our plate and not be fussy about food. There were times when I would be sitting at the table after lunch or dinner, having not eaten something because I decided I didn’t like it and actually remaining there until I had eaten it,” Middleton explained. “And in the end I liked everything because I had to.”

Considering Middleton’s upbringing, it’d only make sense for her to instill similar values in her child, especially since Middleton is passionate about healthy eating. We hope Middleton’s little one likes his vegetables! Otherwise, dinnertime might not be his favorite part of the day.

He'll receive a lot of attention

Even though Pippa Middleton’s baby boy won’t have a royal title to his name, the kiddo will likely still receive tons of attention from the adoring — and critical — public. He’s related to royalty, after all! And, given the focus on his royal first cousins, he’ll unfortunately have to get used to paparazzi. At least he’ll have dear ol’ mom and dad to help guide him as he grows up in the spotlight. They had to learn all about their high-profile life the hard way.

“I have had a few years of being in the public eye and I have developed something of a thick skin,” Pippa Middleton shared with the Daily Mail in September 2016. “But managing it all on my own has been quite hard. I have quite a lot thrown at me, such as being followed by people hiding behind cars and jumping out with cameras. It can be unnerving.”
